Thesis Title: Countering Official History: Independent Historiography in the Soviet Dissidence, 1956-1985

Pr. André Liebich

About

I am a PhD student at IHEID, Geneva. My geographical focus is on Russia, the Soviet Union and Ukraine. I am especially interested in 20th century history, but also in the late 19th century. Questions of identity, nation-building and nationalism are of particular interest to me. My Master thesis focused (broadly speaking)on the uses of the Soviet Past in nation-building in contemporary Ukraine. For my PhD thesis, I wished to keep a focus on uses of memory and history, but this time, instead of analyzing memory politics of the state, I want to study historiography produced by the dissidence, in opposition to the official Soviet history, in the 1960s-1970s-1980s.
